“The Post Partum Journey-Selfcare Strategies For New Mothers”

A mother’s love for her newborn baby is one of the most special bonds in the world. The moment a
woman becomes aware that she has conceived, the love in her starts blossoming for her child
growing within her. Her journey of Motherhood from being pregnant for 9 months and giving birth
to a newborn child involves a lot of emotional and physical changes in her. At this time, she seeks
support and help from the people around her, especially her partner.

-The Partner/ Husband’s Role

The role of her partner is very important at this stage. They can take a lot of responsibility in
managing a the new born. The husband can take care of the new-born when the mother is sleeping.
If the mother has had a C-section or has vaginal stiches the father can help make the baby sleep post
their feed while she is still recovering from the procedure. They should talk to their wives to
understand how they feel as the hormonal changes in the body post-delivery and the lack of sleep
make new mothers go through a variation in moods.

-Help from Friends and Family

Any help is welcome during this time. Invite your parents, siblings to help you or keep a paid home
care provider to help with the daily activities like cooking, cleaning utensils, laundry or cleaning the
house. Having a baby is not just bringing a new life in the world but starting a new family which can
be tiring for both the parents. Therefore, any help from friends and family is good help, and the
Parents should graciously accept it during this new phase of their lives. Any older family members
who have prior experience with taking care of newborns and infants can be of huge help in guiding
first time parents.

-Nutrition and Self Care

The Nutrition of a new mother has to be balanced. She should get good amount of proteins,
carbohydrates, vegetables, fruits in her diet. Lean Proteins. Legumes, green leafy vegetable, nuts,
seeds and fruits make wholesome diet. Ensure that all ingredients are of the best quality and have
been properly cleaned and cooked so as to avoid any gastric issues for the feeding mother. The
mother has to be well hydrated as post feeding the thirst increases. A good 3-5 liters of water on a
daily basis is important. Gradually small walks should be started for some fresh air.

-Mood Management

A new mother suffers with the feeling of guilt, anxiety, fatigue, sleep deprivation and severe mood
swings. The thought that she has to do the best for her baby where there are no chances of mistakes
makes her strain herself as well as over-analyze her own actions. A simple assurance by her loved
ones that she is doing well and she is a great mother from time to time can comfort her and raise
her confidence. Some mothers may experience low moods due to the recent changes in their body.
In cases where these lows are more persistent or affecting the mother’s health, please consult a
family physician or a therapist who has an expertise in post-partum mental health care.
